A year ago, Tusk launched its Crisis Appeal in response to the immediate impact that the Covid-19 pandemic was having on wildlife conservation initiatives across Africa. These challenges, and new ones that are still arising, continue to significantly affect our project partners and the communities they support.

For the second year running, Tusk’s Lewa Safari Marathon is going virtual, on the 26th June. All funds raised will go towards recovering the destruction that Covid-19 has brought on wildlife and local communities in Kenya. Entry is now open. Lace up your shoes: let’s run.

An annual survey of consumers has shown that demand for ivory in China has dropped to less than half the level it was before the country introduced a domestic ban on trade. Tusk has welcomed the news while cautioning that there is “no room for complacency”.

The Times and Sunday Times Christmas Appeal closed on Sunday, having raised a record amount for the three charities supported, including more than £630,000 for Tusk.

As we reflect on the success of the fundraising appeal, the difference it will make is more important than ever in light of the extra challenges that have emerged over the past year.

South Africa’s Ministry of Forestry, Fisheries and Environmental Affairs has released its 2019-2020 SANParks Annual Report, in which the full impact of rhino poaching in the world-famous Kruger National Park has been fully documented for the first time in some years. The figures report a loss of two-thirds of the park's white rhino population, and one-third of its black rhino population within less than a decade.
