Our partner VulPro is at the forefront of African vulture conservation and recently documented the first ever captive bred Lappet-Faced Vulture, from birth to release into the wild. This is an incredible story and as such will benefit the numbers of these wonderful birds. For vultures, extinction is alarmingly a real and pressing threat, a loss that neither the local, nor the global ecosystem can afford. These undervalued, often ignored and sometimes vilified birds are key components in the African ecosystem. They are nature’s very own sanitation service, consuming carcasses and absorbing harmful bacteria in the process. They also act as natural alarm systems to prevent poaching. Alongside the benefits they bring to the wider ecosystem, vultures are dedicated parents, intelligent and sociable. Despite this, numbers are declining and vultures are now on the endangered list.
