A New Dawn
Michael Keigwin (Uganda Conservation Foundation) & Charles Tumwesigye (Uganda Wildlife Authority) will provide a fascinating and inspirational account of how Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park has experienced dramatically mixed fortunes, from international adoration to tragedy, and steadily back towards a conservation and development success story, thanks to their efforts.
Murchison Fall National Park, Uganda - ‘A New Dawn’
Five years ago, Murchison’s wildlife was in the grip of a poaching crisis and the park was being threatened by oil extraction. It was at this time that Michael received a call from his close friends Charles and Tom Okello (Chief Park Warden of Murchison Falls) with a very clear message: ‘Resign from your job at Deloitte in London and come home. Murchison is in dire trouble and desperately needs help.’
Having raised some much-needed funds, the three of them rolled up their sleeves and began tackling problem after problem, with the Uganda Conservation Foundation playing a vital role in administering funds and providing supporting services to a motivated and dedicated Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Through grit and determination they are turning the tide. One of Africa’s most spectacular and important protected areas is gradually making a comeback, with wildlife and tourism rebounding quickly. This is a story of hope; of how it is possible to take on challenges, face limitations, and find solutions. It is not to be missed!
