Murchison Fall, Uganda  - ‘A New Dawn’

The story of a national park with an incredible history; from international adoration to tragedy - and now realizing the promise of a total recovery in wildlife, tourism and local development.

Five years ago Michael Keigwin was called by close friends at the Uganda Wildlife Authority, both colleagues from working in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Tom Okello (Chief Park Warden of Murchison Falls) and Charles Tumwesigye (Deputy Director of Field Operations). The message was clear: ‘Resign from your job at Deloitte in London and come home. Murchison is in dire trouble and desperately needs help.’

The three planned and went about raising funds. They rolling their sleeves up and got down to sorting out problem after problem  and with the support of close partners and the Uganda Conservation Foundation to help administer funds and provide supporting services, they have gradually been turning the tide. This is a story of determination, facing up to limitations and finding solutions.

A New Dawn looks at a park that was under extreme poaching pressure and challenges from industry, and has emerged as a conservation and development success story.

One of Africa’s most spectacular and important protected areas is making a comeback with wildlife numbers and tourism rebounding quickly and at the heart of it, a motivated and dedicated Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Michael Keigwin and Charles Tumwesigye will be delivering the talk together.
