Safaricom Marathon 2014
The 15th Anniversary Safaricom Marathon and Half Marathon took place on the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy on Saturday 28th June 2014. Organised by Tusk and supported by Safaricom, this fundraising event hosted over 1,200 runners in the full and half marathon event, 180 children in the 5km children's race and over 5,000 spectators. Forty-three nationalities were represented with participants coming from as far afield as Ecuador and New Zealand to take part.
Over the last 15 years the event has transformed countless lives and invested over US$4.2m into Kenya. We hope this year will be as successful as ever. In the coming months we will know the total amount raised; the results will be published on the Tusk and Safaricom Marathon websites with details on how the funds will be distributed between the various beneficiaries.
As with previous years, the funds raised will go to benefit a wide range of conservation and community programmes across Kenya. Thousands of children in a number of schools will get new classrooms and improved facilities; numerous pastoral communities to the north of Lewa will see benefits as marathon funds will support a raft of initiatives designed to improve lives and increase security for both people and wildlife. Tusk will also direct considerable funds into rhino and elephant conservation at Lewa as well as a variety of other critical projects spread across the country.
We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part - runners and their supporters, volunteers on the day and all of the event sponsors - for making this such a successful event.
