Projects operating in Kenya

Green Warriors Movement
Location: Maasai Mara National Park
Normally associated with the colour red due to their bright traditional shukas, a group of enterprising young Maasai in Kenya have gone green. The Green Warriors are spearheading a campaign to clean up the trading centres and entry points into the world famous Maasai Mara Reserve. “As a community based organization, we aim to conserve the local environment but also we aspire to raise the living standards of the youth and local communities co-existing with the wildlife of our area so that they can see it as benefit to their lives”.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy
Location: Imenti District
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy has become renowned world wide for its innovative and highly successful conservation strategies for the wildlife of northern Kenya. Set in the foothills of Mount Kenya, Lewa a privately run organisation has initiated a rhino breeding programme that has become so successful rhino are now being moved to other parts of Kenya to boost existing populations or create new ones.

Il Ngwesi Group Ranch
Location: Il Ngwesi Group Ranch, Mukogodo Division, Laikipia District
Il Ngwesi is a 16,500 acre group ranch owned collectively by the 499 families that inhabit the land. With the help of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, the community at Il Ngwesi are now contributing to the protection of wildlife on their land. Their incorporation began slowly, initially local herdsmen being provided with radios to report poaching incidents, but as time progressed the community began to understand the benefits of having wildlife on their land, domestic and foreign visitors were attracted, and with them came a source of revenue and employment.

Lamu Marine Conservation Project
Location: Lamu Island
The project promotes education both in schools and the local communities, which is designed to improve fishing methods less harmful to the turtles found in Kenyan waters, and create a greater environmental awareness. The project has also been working with other hoteliers to protect and encourage sustainable use of the marine life. One hotel renowned for poaching has set up a beach patrol and has begun monitoring nest sites.

Lekurruki Conservation Trust
Location: Group Ranch, Mukogodo Division, Laikipia District
Over the last ten years the local Maasai communities of northern Kenya have initiated inspiring and innovative policies to protect their tribal lands and the wildlife that exists there. Lekurruki Group Ranch on the Mukogodo escarpment, has been at the forefront of these projects and has set a precedent for new form of wildlife conservation.

Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust
Location: Sarara & Sabache Group Ranches, Wamba Division, Samburu District
The Mathews Mountain Range of northern Kenya is one of the last great stretches of pristine African wilderness, where high-forested peaks shadow semi-desert plains. The area encompasses some of the most significant undeveloped, unprotected and important wildlife areas in Kenya outside its National Parks. By liasing with the Maasai communities of Il Ngwesi and Lekurruki, the Samburu people of Namunyak have turned their land, which is of very marginal use for grazing, over to wildlife conservation and tourism.

The Koiyaki Guiding School
Location: Narok District
The Koiyaki Guiding School & Wilderness Camp is owned and managed by the Maasai community. It adjoins the northern boundary of the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, and is an important dispersal area for the wildlife. The aim of the project is to equip local Maasai people - through practical training - with skills necessary for their full participation in the conservation and management of wildlife and related enterprises through enrolment in the Koiyaki Guiding School.

Kibodo Trust
Location: Lamu and Ijara District
The Kibodo project is a unique initiative on Kenya's northern Kenyan coast which brings together the protection and management of three remote but important eco-systems. The project area is located in the North Eastern corner of coastal Kenya, adjoining southern Somalia and comprising of approximately 2,500 sq km of marine, forest and cultural reserve.

Northern Rangelands Trust
Location: Laikipia, East & West Samburu, Isiolo, Baringo, East Pokot, Laisamis and Ijara districts
There is a quiet revolution happening in northern Kenya, where over 60,000 people have decided to dedicate their land, 1.6 million acres in total, to wildlife conservation. This is a first in East Africa, if not across the whole continent and the movement, the Northern Rangelands Trust, forms the basis for Tusk’s support to community conservation.

Maasailand Preservation Trust
Location: Chyulu Hills
In a thickly vegetated lava flow stretching from the Chyulu National Park into the Maasai owned Imbirikani Group Ranch, there can be found the last remaining wild Black Rhino in Kenya.

Sera Wildlife Conservancy
Location: Samburu, Marsabit and Isiolo Districts
Sera Wildlifer Conservancy (Sera) is a community conservation initiative of the Serolevi and Losesia Group Ranches in eastern Samburu District.

Ruko Community
Location: Baringo District
Ruko Community Wildlife Conservancy is one of the newly established conservancies under the Northern Rangelands Trust.

Mpus Kutuk Community Conservancy
Location: Kipsing, Samburu District
Mpus Kutuk is the newest edition to the Northern Rangelands Trust conservancies but an important one as it forms the missing piece in the jigsaw of conservancies that stretch from the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy north to the far end of the Mathews Range.

Mountain Bongo Surveillance Project
Location: Aberdares National Park
The Mountain Bongo Surveillance Project aims to conserve the highly endangered mountain bongo antelope through protection of their habitat, the Aberdare Mountains, and by encouraging local communities to get involved in the conservation of this beautiful and rare species.
